Coeliac Disease Recognized as a Chronic Illness in Spain: A Landmark for the Coeliac Community
On July 4, 2025, a pivotal moment unfolded for people with coeliac disease in Spain. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the autonomous communities, approved the Joint Document for the Approach to Chronic Conditions, officially recognizing coeliac disease as a chronic illness.
What does this recognition mean?
It transforms the medical classification of coeliac disease and opens doors to tangible improvements:
- Clearer healthcare protocols and specialized medical follow-up
- Inclusion in public health policies
- Potential financial support for gluten-free food
- Adapted menus in schools and hospitals
- Integration into long-term public health strategies
A step toward equity
Over 500,000 people in Spain are affected, many still undiagnosed. The only treatment is a lifelong strict gluten-free diet, which involves daily effort and a high economic cost. Until now, this reality wasn’t officially recognized as chronic, limiting access to institutional resources and support.
At Adpan, we celebrate this recognition as a matter of healthcare justice. It’s a fundamental step toward visibility and inclusion for the coeliac community.
We’ll keep working
This achievement is the result of tireless advocacy by associations, health professionals and individuals with coeliac disease.
We remain committed to quality, safety and flavor, continuing to innovate and honor tradition for the well-being of those who live gluten-free.
