Panettone: origin and curiosities

Panettone is much more than a dessert: it is a symbol of Christmas and an emblem of Italian pastry that has conquered the world. In this post you will discover its history, curiosities, and why it remains essential on festive tables.

Origin of panettone

  • Panettone was born in Milan in the 15th century. Its name comes from the Italian word panetto (“small bread”), with the augmentative suffix -one, meaning “big bread.”
  • One of the most popular legends tells that a young man named Toni, assistant at the court of Ludovico il Moro, improvised a sweet bread with raisins and candied fruits after burning the official dessert. The result was so successful that it was called Pan de Toni, the origin of today’s panettone.

Ingredients and characteristics

  • Made with brioche-type dough, enriched with butter, eggs, and sugar.
  • Traditionally filled with raisins and candied fruits (orange, citron, and lemon), though today versions with chocolate, cream, or nuts exist.
  • Its tall, fluffy dome shape distinguishes it from other sweet breads.

International expansion

  • From Milan, panettone spread throughout Italy and later to Europe and Latin America. In countries like Peru and Argentina, it became a Christmas classic, also known as panetón or sweet bread.
  • Today, its production combines artisanal methods with industrial processes, although Italian panettones maintain a regulated designation that guarantees quality.

Tradition and consumption

  • Panettone is mainly enjoyed at Christmas and New Year, accompanied by coffee, hot chocolate, or even sweet wines.
  • In Italy, it is common to gift it in decorative boxes, making it a cherished festive detail.
